2001 46RE in a 1999 Durango - progress report
Well,
This has been an experience. Unlike what some believe, all 46re's are not created equal. From what I have learned,
2000 46Re, Valve body sensors were changed. the 8-pin connector will still plug in, but definitely not the same sensors
2001, the 3-pin neutral safety switch was dumped for a Transmission Range sensor, which is a 5-pin connector...Sonnax makes an adapter to allow you to use the old style switch in the newer model case. Bonus, but you do have to crack open the trans and swap the shift lever cam in order to make this conversion work.
So. I now have the trans in. The truck is running....Kinda. From what I am seeing now though. The Valve body sensors may not be jiving with the ECN, because I only have reverse and first gear.
The dummy light is on, so I am running it up to the auto parts store tomorrow to get the codes.
But if this is the problem. I am going to attempt to swap out the new sensors for the old. I am not sure if this will work or if it is gonna require a complete valve body swap.
If anybody has any experience with this, I am curious to hear what they did. Otherwise I will just wing it.

I have heard of little imperfections but DAMN! Sounds like 1998-2000 are swap and 2001-2003 are swap. Anyway, that it being found in many areas and looks like we can add one more to the book so thanks for the feedback.

you shouldnt have to run up to the auto parts store to get the DTC'S. Just put your key in the ignition and go "acc, on, acc, on, acc, on" The third time you turn it to "on" the DTC should pop up where your mileage is displayed.
Yes, 2000+ Durangos only but that will only give ya SOME transmission codes but not all.

No, Unfortunately that does not work on the 99's. But I finally got around to getting the scan tool hooked up. And, bout as I suspected. Got Two codes, then cleared them, drove it for a few minutes and got two codes again.
First Check gave me:
P0753 - Shift solenoid 'A'
and
P1762 - Governor Pressure Sensor Voltage Low/High
Second time I got:
P1762 - Governor Pressure Sensor Voltage Low/High
and
P0743 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
So....It Looks like tomorrow I will be dropping the pan once again, and trying to change out the sensor cluster. I am again, not sure if this can just be swapped or if I am gonna have to change over the whole valve body.
Going to look to see what the internet can tell me now.
I will try to post again tomorrow on my progress

The unfortunate reality is I am running out of patience and time on this.
I am needing it for my daily driver in about a week and a couple days.
I swapped out the Governor pressure sensor from the 01 style to the 99 style and didn't see much difference.
I do have a strange problem going on. If I am in 1 or 2, it is taking off in 1st I think, but if I start in D, it seems to be locked in 2nd, because if I shift from 1 or 2 while driving, I do get a gear shift when it goes into D.
But there is no automatic shifting going on.
I did not replace out the OD/Lockup solenoid. It looked the same, and had the same part number on it, so I assumed it was the same.
And in order for me to put the old governor pressure sensor in it, I had to change the connector to the old style. So I could have done a less than great job scabbing the old connector onto the harness.
I was wondering if there are other areas I should be looking, besides internal.
Throttle linkage cable maybe?
Any fuses?
I figure looking at other issues before I drop the pan again. I am tired of the trans fluid waterfall.
