may I ask why you dropped the pan, were you havign an issue??

I have a 4.7 in 02 Jeep.

No issues at all. I just wanted to go synthetic. Been hearing good things about mobil1 so I decided one day to do it. No sludge, it's a myth btw, just time for a regular oil change.

I dropped the pan because I felt the knowledge gained was worth it, one way or the other. I found a debris filled filler screen on the oil pick up tube. Would not have gained this knowledge without dropping the pan. Would not have fixed my issue without the same knowledge. KNOCK on WOOD, so far so good. Oil pressure good and the truck is running well.

Yep, sometimes you just have to get in there and get dirty to learn first-hand on how things work. I've noticed that I retain the knowledge better if I got right into the work than by reading about it. But that's just me.

So the pickup screen was clogged but was the pan clean or was there some sludge?

If the atttachemnt shows, pic of my 03 PT GT with valve cover removed at 100K miles

I had a flush added before the pan was dropped. With that in mind, I was ready for, and did find some gunk in the pan. Not an obscene amount. Was it there before the flush??????. The grit, think coffee grind size mixed with thick oil, that was clogging the screen, wasn't in huge proportions in the pan either. Sadly, I did not cut the filter open after the flush was finished. All in all, I am glad we took the time and effort.

MMMMM sludge. I said it too. My money is on the sending unit either the pickup is clogged or it has failed.

concur with autopete, I think the synthetic has caused the fossil based sludge to break up and clog the pickup screen, utilize a good engine flush...drop the pan, GI the pan and crank case area,install a new oil pump and screen, go back to petroleum based oil(Castrol GTX or Quaker State high mileage 10w40) after you button it back up...kingoftow

I use atf to flush the system. Run that for about 15 minutes, drain it, and refill with oil. Change the oil after about 100 miles to work that atf out of the engine. ATF has a lot of detergents in it to clean everything out and break all the nasty stuff down.
