Default t-case swap 99 durango?

I have a 99 durango 4x4 5.9, thye tranny is a 46 re and the t- case is the nv 242. i have a crack/chip at the rear seal of the tranny, where the two mate.
easy fix! i also have stress cracks in the t-case housing, so i figure i would kill to birds with one stone and swap the t-case when i fix the crack. the ting is the t-case i have is a np 231! is a np 231( out of a 98 dakota 4x4 v6) and nv242 inter changeable?

Your 5.9 4x4 shows a NV321 and thats it,If you have a 5.2 then it will use a NV242 or NV231 transfer case.AN NP231 will not work.Did you look at the round tag on the transfer case and ck the part number and the NV numbers too.

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you all, Master Tech! Why, cause he's the most knowledgeable about transmissions by far on this forum!

A 5.9L should have the NV242, and 5.2L the NV231.

I am puzzled as to why a 5.9L would ever have the NV231 as that should be the 5.2L. You can verify the model by crawling under the Durango and on the back side (rear end side) of the T-case about 1/4 the way down you will find a round ID Tag. On this ID Tag it will state the model of the transfer case you have installed at this time.
