Default Transmission Oil Pan Rusted Through

My '03 D started leaking transmission fluid. It has rusted to a point where fluid is dripping out. Should I attempt a repair or just get a new pan? Any recommendations on where to buy a pan? It has the 4.7l motor.

i would just get a new pan, either from the dealer, or rockauto.com or you can get a larger aftermarket pan form a number of online retailers

You can also get one from a bone yard. Make sure you place the magnet in the bottom of the pan before installation. Also replace BOTH filters and install ATF+4 ONLY! I like Valvoline Fully Synthetic ATF+4 or ATF+4 from the dealer. DO NOT use anything else!

I would use a rubber gasket or reuse yours. Just clean and lubricate it before insallation. You lubricate it with a light coat of regular grease.

I did a search and found this thread. I have an '02 Ram and have never heard of this problem. The other day I drove to the post office, came back and parked in the garage and when I went back out, tranny fluid all over. I looked at the pan and after scraping the loose paint off, I found about three good size pin holes. I got another new one and put on. Is it really a common thing for Dodge pans to rust out? Like I said, I never heard of this. At least not on other cars or trucks.

No it's not, but salt corrodes the pans.

I'd consider a pan with a drain plug. Just my 2¢ ...
