Default 01 dingo key wont turn

My 01 durango key wont turn. Out of the blue this started then quit then a year later same thing again. Now my ride is stuck out of town at my parents house. Does anyone know what the problem is? i'd tried hitting it with a malet and it didnt work!

is this a factory key?? or a copy? try a factory key, and preferably the newest (least used) one that you have see if its just a worn down key

Make sure it's in Park. My mother has called me on more than one occasion and she had not put the car in park. Oh brother.

What did you do a year ago when it was happening? Obviously didn't fix it.

there is an ignition lock on the gear shift so that if the key doesnt turn you cannot shift it into gear, afaik there is no override for this 'safety feature'

Is the steering wheel turned at all? Can you wiggle the wheel to loosen the lock? Could be the wheel's turned and putting pressure on the locking mechanism.
