I'm a huge Jeep guy and I'm just trying to get some information for a project I'm doing. I currently have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It has the 5.2l with an all wheel drive transfercase. I was wondering if it would be possible for a direct bolt in of a durango transfercase into my Jeep. I know the early models came with the 5.2l and the NP231HD transfercase. This is my theory and please forgive me if I have any wrong information:

Durango: 5.2l + NV46RE + NP231HD = awesomeness

Grand Cherokee: 5.2l + NV49RE + NP249 = horrible off road vehicle

I know that the transmissions are different only because the NV49RE is Grand Cherokee specific because of the placement of the starter, internally they are exactly the same.

Also if anyone has some other information about the rear axle. I'm not sure but I think its the Chryco 10.5? I would like to know the gear ratio, axle width, and bolt pattern if someone could help me out. Thanks for all your help!

idk what you have the jeep, but the durangos came with chrysler 8.25 or 9.25 rear differential, there should be a tag on them somewhere to indicate what gear ratio, they could have either 3.55 or 3.92 from the factory, and limited slip was available in either one

i cant help on the direct bolt on, but iirc all the t-cases that were using w/ a given engine on the durango are interchangable

 

i believe the spline count is different on them

 

okay I wasnt sure on the rear axle. My Jeep has the Dana35 and I'm afraid with the abuse that I'm giving it, that its going to fail. Now I have the Chryco 8.25 in my Cherokee and from my experience its stronger than what I have in my Grand Cherokee. How strong approximatly would the 9.25 be? Does it have disc or drum brakes? And does anyone have any idea on the spline count of the transfercase? You guys are such a big help you have no idea! Its hard to find any real information on this subject.

not sure about the spline count the 9.25 is the stronger of the two, its used in the full size rams which (i would say) can abuse it alot harder than we can. the 9.25 can come either way depending on what model/year you get it from the 03 durangos had disk brakes on the rear, the rest had drums, the dakota uses the same axle and i believe 03 and 04 had rear disks

 

The 9.25 has 31 splines....IIRC.


The main question is;

what transmission do you have?

 

The transmission I have is the NV49RE but it is Jeep Grand Cherokee specific only because of the placement of the starter on the bellhousing. I recently rebuilt the transmission using Durango internals with my Grand Cherokee transmission housing so I figured if the internals are the same, why wouldnt the trasnfercase bolt up? So I did alittle research, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but the 98-99 Durango transfercase has a 23 spline input shaft with a 27 spline output shaft which is the same as my Grand Cherokee. I have already found a suitable Durango at the local Pull A Part and was planning to go pull the transfercase on Friday, but one thing I overlooked; does the Durango have a transfercase that engages electronically or is it a lever that you pull? My Jeep has a lever to engage the 4x4 and if it is electronic is there a way I can convert it over to the lever?

1998-1999 is manual lever shifting so you will be ok. 2000-2003 is electronic.


NV242 should be 23 Input Shaft

Not sure on the NV231?
