Should get rid of most of it. The last thing you want to do is maul the block surface in ANY way. Once you get the bolt out you can clean it better.

i agree with hydra, you do NOT want to put ANY marks in the block surface wayy too expensive to fix

I definately agree..... And that is precisely my question. Will a wire wheel leave marks on the surface, or is the head a harder material that the wheel?????

It will most likely leave marks, don't chance it!

Get it off, THEN you could try it on the flat surface. But even at that I would use very light sand paper.

If you are up in the night about cleaning off the bolt thread/rust at the head, simply place sand paper around the bolt with a hand on each side. Start sanding and slowly move the paper down to the bottom of the bolt (like a lathe) at the head enough to clean it off.

well....not having any luck getting that broken bolt out yet... I tried soaking it in wd-40, as well as PB Blast. I got some vice grips on it as tight as I could, tried gently working it back and forth, and it won't budge. I didn't want to ruin what little I had to grab onto, so I went to plan b.... I tried drilling a pilot hole down the center of it with the smallest bit I have, so later I could step it up a size or two.... Well, that didn't go as planned because the tip of the drill bit broke off inside there about a 1/4 inch deep. So now, what should I do?? Cut off the bolt just below where the bit broke, and redrill or what???

Thanks

I forgot to put sealant on the for corners of the block. So far no leaks.

Not sure what that post has to do with my issue, but again...

Well you did have quite a bit of a shank hanging out. 1/4 inch isn't very much to cut off so I say do it........or........heat it up with a torch and you could also try a very small pipe wrench?

I will try the pipe wrench idea thanks.... Yes, it looks like there is quite a bit of the old bolt sticking out, but keep in mind that the head is at a slant..... So 1/4 inch is about all I have to grab onto. And because it is at a slant, if I do grab onto it, I can't turn it very far before I start bumping against the head... And if I cut off 1/4 inch, I won't have anything left to grab onto.....
