Probally be leaning towards the Projections, hope their legal.
NO XENON HID conversion kit available from any source is DOT approved if installed outside of the factory <<is that true?
Also are the sylvania lights worth $40, they are only gaurenteed for up to 1 year. Do they dull out quick?
I JUST WHANT THE BEST HEADLIGHTS I CAN GET FOR $200.00

If you install an HID kit into your existing headlight housing, you may get a spraying effect with the light output. That means the beams may not be focused enough for safe night driving. Projection housings help in focusing the HIDs into manageable beams for driving. I got lucky when I installed my HIDs, the aftermarket crystal headlight housings were a good match for the HIDs.
Yeah, it's not DOT certified if you install aftermarket HIDs outside the factory. But the law generally doesn't really bust your chops unless you try to blind oncoming traffic! LOL! That's why I aim my beams lower than usual but they still light up the road like the sun. HTH.
Oh yeah, I did a comparison when I installed the HIDs with the silverstar ultras I had. Big difference, the silverstars were dimmer than the HIDs.

I have a HID kit on my 2000 Durango and I love it! It's an ease to install and it's much brighter than the projector.
As far as ease goes, HID all the way and as far as lasting the longest same answer. I have the 10k lumens and I can see anything and everything even in the darkest nights.
The projector are pointed at one specific angle so if they are not installed correctly, things can go horribly wrong. Not to mention, you need a new housing and bulbs run about $70 a pop for projection bulbs. My full install out of pocket for my HID bulbs off eBay was $80.
Make sure when you get them it comes with the ballast and bulbs, as for with HID it requires a special convertor ballast.
IMO I believe the HID would be the smarter more practical choice for our rigs.
Hope this helped

Prove me wrong. Pull up to a wall at night and take a picture of your cut-off pattern. You will probably see many stray beams above the main concentration on light. This is what blinds everyone.
You say projector housing bulbs are $70 each? Usually they are just normal bulbs in the projector housing.
The correct way to do it is to use projector housings for you HID and then aim them properly.
Agreed Scott. Although he was asking for which was brighter, easier to install, and which last longer. It would last the same if you put your HID bulb in a projector housing, but comparing projector to HID in stock housing, the stock housing is much brighter.
But as you said it is much brighter and I forgot to mention I have my stock housings aimed low. Also, I have a BMW which utilizes projector lamps OEM and they are a special bulb that cost in the ballpark of $70 each just for the bulb.
Not sure but wouldn't doubt in a aftermarket housing that its just a regular bulb with a lens in front of it.
