When I bought my Durango the A/C was bypassed with a shorter belt because the compressor was seized on it too. Truck runs just fine without it. A/C is not necessary for winter defrost but it does help.
Yes it's not necessary but it definitely does help because it has evaporated air and not moist air from outside. I hate the fact that I don't have A/C sometimes but I did notice a slight increase in fuel economy since I removed it.
