I have an '03 Durango. I did a tune up on my truck and right after it started to make a ticking noise under the hood. I can hear it in the cab and sometimes it vibrates real bad but it only does it when it's in gear even when I'm sitting still in gear. What's the deal.
Is there anything erratic showinnon your tach when it is doing this? And were they just the cheap champion copper plugs? As long as they had nothing to do with platinum.

It is not the plugs most likely. I would try the wires first either one is not seated well or moving an old wire has exposed cracks or bad spots in the insulation and it is sparking to ground which would explain the rough running and the tick. The easy way to find this kind of problem is to go out in the dark and fire it up and you should be able to see the spark.

Not sure about the other engines available, but the '03 4.7's have individual coil packs on each plug with only 12v going to each one, as well as they bolt down onto the plugs so it's pretty tough to install them wrong. They will break if rough handle them when they're removed, and it will cause the same symptoms. I think the CEL will code out to a misfire though. In my case I *knew* which one I dropped and swapped it when the truck missed on startup. Make sure you didn't damage a connector when you removed them from the coil pack (the locks are tough to disengage sometimes).
The 318 and 360 have a standard distibutor and wire setup. The OP did not mention it in this post and did not even think about the 4.7 as mine is a 360.

If the sparks are colder or of other than OEM it makes the motor tick. Replace them with the correct plug Champion Copper and gap at .040.
It sounds like under load is the tick, well try a better fuel or octane as this could be ping.
Then again:

Most likely it's what you replaced! Um, maybe it could be the spark plugs.....LOL....It's the only other thing it could be on a 4.7L cause it's the only thing you changed.
