Default P/S fluid type for 98?

Have seen a couple different posts stating what fluid to use in the power steering. What is the 98 supposed to use? Its leaked since I got it, previous owner was using regular p/s fluid and so was I. It has been getting worse and worse obviously, and since Im working on so much else on the truck while the trans is down, I figured Id replace the hose while Im at it. Its the pressure hose, already bought the hose, just wondering what I need to put back in it so it'll be right. I dumped half a quart of +4 in it the other day to move it around the yard after seeing that here.

I already have 2 quarts of +4 sittin in the storage bin in the back, do I need to grab some regular ps fluid or use the +4 or something else? (other than dealership branded crap.)

check your owners manual, it is either the brown mopar fluid which is dealer only, or atf +4, you should NOT mix the two or put the wrong one in the system.

No owners manual, damage was already done before I got the truck.

I was also looking into this recently for my 98. The 98 uses the Mopar power steering fluid for the Durango which is only available at the dealer, I can't find it online. You should probably remove that ATF+4 as soon as possible.

Its out, flushed it when changing the hose. The shop supervisor for the local Dodge dealer couldnt find any of their fluid to order, said there was a part number but he couldnt even order it. He then advised me to use regular power steering fluid, said thats what they use and Havnt had any problems. Ive known the guy for about 6 years, and hes related on my wifes side somewhere so I dont think he was just trying to get rid of me.

I wouldn't advise using just regular power steering fluid or ATF +4. I know somebody came into the shop and insisted I put regular in their 99 Durango and they turned right around saying they had problem out the azz.

Luckily my shop has a waiver of liability the customer must sign if they choose to go against our recommendation.

Anyways, they have different weights and are not the same fluid, so I'd just go to another dealer and see if try cant find it.

I'll call one in Tulsa or Muskogee, both are about the same distance from me. Maybe somebody will be able to find it. Thank you, also.

99% sure it's Brown fluid. ATF+4 is NOT interchangeable. Take your VIN# with you and ask the dealer or simply call them. The only place you can get it is from the dealer if it is brown. ATF+4 can be had at many places, but you said you have it already.

Check this TSB, it tells you what we have said but also gives you dealership product numbers so you have reference when calling the service center...
