Default Axles

What would be a ballpark figure on changing the gearing in both axles? I toyed with the idea 2 years ago and was told it would be about a thousand an axle (parts and labor), that seems a little high but im not a mech. Also where do i look for a ring and pinion for a 3500# axle?

That is high. At most my shop would charge you in the ballpark of $800 for the entire job. The parts you can find on jegs or summit racing for around $250 a set an the labor isn't horrible but if you don't know what you're doing you would be better off paying someone to do it.

What is your current gearing and what are you wanting to get. I would say if you were going to 4.10 an higher for towing do it but if you're just looking to go from 3.55 to 3.92 it wouldn't be all that cost effective.

Also, what were you wanting to benefit from by going higher gearing? This can better help us let you know what the price is by knowing why gears you want.

I have 3.55's now, and im running 33's. I was hoping that 3.92 or 4.10's would be easier on the drivetrain. When i went to 33's, my overdrive was rendered useless. It's there but a stiff wind would push you back.

right now i get 8.6mpg, not sure if changing gears would help but it's worth asking. I don't tow anything but i do spend alot of time offroad. My build so far is not for speed, but more for offroad (although it does like a diet of Eddie Baur explorers....lol).

Anyway, if you say its not worth it, i trust that. Just trying to figure my possibilities. thanks for the help.

Typically the 3.55 will have better gas mileage than the 3.92 but the 3.92 or 4.10 does a million times better at towing. If you're doing mostly off road then you can benefit from the added torque from a higher gear ratio.

If I were you I'd assess your wants and needs and figure if it is really necessary to up the higher gear ratio. Like I said it will do better off road and towing, but will suffer gas mileage over the 3.55.

I'm guessing that you're asking about your Ram that has the Dana 60/70 combo?

We just recently did work on a 98 Ram 3500 with the 70HD rear end and the Dana 60 front end and the price we gave them was $800 for parts and $1100 for labor. This customer was also going from 3.55 to 4.10.

Yukon Gears:

4.11 Front-End:

4.11 Rear-End:

Also requires gaskets and fluid replacement (Valvoline Syn is recommended). We did not replace clutch packs but sometimes a rebuild can be in order if they're burnt up.

I was thinking preventative maintenance in replacing the clutch packs. The Power-Lok I have is a simple bolt together style not the PITA style......LOL

$306.86
$286.32
______

$593.18 Plus a master bearing and seal kit about $130 Fluid (I use Mobil FS LS) $50 and some Friction Modifier $10 shop supplies and such $50......hmmmmm

$783.18 Plus $130 for clutch packs = $913.18 and some tax = $950 and that don't include labor.

Is there a reason you chose those gears? I've heard about those Gears (think made by Dana or A&M something like that) that are a 5 cut gear?

These are the only gears I've used since I got in the field. I have not heard of those gears you speak of... any information on them?
