When did you do your routine maintenance? Or did you?

To make a blank statement like that, well give us some information on what happened?

I don't buy new cars. Bought it used. I don't know what was done to it. I still expect a tranny to last more than 90k miles even if the fluid was never changed. (Fluid level was fine and not burned smelling and still red.)

What I am trying to say here is, you have no idea then what the previous owner did to this thing. He could have used it to tow up some really gnarly hills or what not, not including if he ever did his normal maintenance schedule.

You might expect the transmission to last 90k+ miles without service, however that's not the way Chrysler has it set up. You (or other owner) are supposed to change the trans fluid at 60k or at least 30k depending on service (according to the operational manual).

Not tryin to drill ya here, but I'm just sayin.

I agree with hydra on this one. I bought my Durango new from the Dodge dealer back in 99 and it's been pulling a 7,000# trailer at least twice a week towing cars and tools in a cargo trailer.

That being said, I have the 46re transmission and have changed the transmission fluid religiously every 35,000 miles and change the filter every other fluid change. I have never had a problem with my transmission and still is the factory transmission.

Vehicles are 90% of how you treat them. If you don't do an oil change, you're gonna get sludge. If you don't change your transmission fluid and filter, you're gonna have transmission problems. Keep in mind a band adjustment can keep it running strong aswell.

If you don't buy new cars, and buy used ones that have no service records, anything can be possible.

What year, style, and engine do you have? IE, I have a 2000 SLT with 5.9. The most common for this generation is the 46re but the 545rfe and 44re were both also used.

Also, look on the pan for a code and give us the code, maybe we can help you out.

the 5.9 came w/ the 46re the 5.2 usually came w/ the 44re, the 45rfe was on the 4.7 from 00-02, 03+ 4.7s(and some of the very late model year 02s) came w/ the 545rfe

widow, the 545 is only available with the 4.7

well the title says its an SLT or a SXT one of the two but any way its a 2002 4x2 with the 4.7 and im thinking its a 3 speed with O.D. i beleave....i dont know a whole lot about it, i bought it to have something safe to haul my 2 year old lil girl in, and i ended up losin my lil girl to a drowning accident in may of last year so i want to keep it in the best shape i can because it was her favorite truck.....so as far as im concerned its the last vehicle ill ever own....my wife says that the dodge tranny's are tough but its my first one so i wouldnt know...so im really dependin on you all to teach me what i need to know to keep it runnin strong...

If it's 3 speed with the 4.7 its most likely a 45rfe as the 545rfe was a 4 speed with OD, IIRC.
