Default Ticking and loss of power

Hi Guys, figured I'd post this here cause my other forums are having issues too. It's a 2002 5.9 R/T . Heres the problem I have had for a year.

Let’s say I'm cruising at 50 mph, I give it a bit more gas to speed up, it feels like it's running rich ? The engine gets low sounding like it's saying I think I can I think I can. Then I can hear a heavy ticking / exhaust leak sound. Happens if it's cold or warmed up. Thing is if I get it do down shift it picks up just fine and no ticking and has lots of power. If it was an exhaust leak wouldn't I hear it at idle standing next to the truck ? If it was the cat wouldn't I have issues all the time ? I also wondered if it could be the intake manifold leaking.

Thanks Guys

Sounds to me like spark knock. Pull the plugs and it wouldnt suprise me if you have 1 or 2 (or all) that are shot. I think i remember seeing something on here about a TSB or recall involving the intake gaskets that would cause the symptoms you are having. I am sure one of the experts (hydra) will put me in my place if i am wrong.

Hmmm, spark knock ? I change my plugs frequently and they never look too bad. I had new gaskets that came with the hughes kit but had to replace them with the dealer version because I had to pull the manifold again after I dropped a push rod into the engine while doind the HS 1.7's

When you replace your plugs do you replace them with el cheapo Champion Copper core? I've seen this from someone who put platinum plugs in it and had the same problems.

I'd also start by cleaning out the throttle body real well, maybe something got gunked up inside. Also is your air filter pretty clean? I've seen this before and the culprit ended up being a stupid dirty air filter.

I do use Champion truck plugs but never thought they were the cheap **** ones. Maybe Ill try something different.

TB is clean. I had a polished and ported one on there and put the stock back but cleaned it before I put it on. Air filter is the K&N washable and I keep it pretty clean. Maybe wash it every 20,000 miles.

Champion truck plugs are fine but OEM is just the cheap $1.79 a plug.

I hear ya. I can't wait until it's warm enough that I can enjoy turning a wrench. Cold, busted knuckles suck! But then again, I'll just start cursing my inadequate A/C when it gets hot outside.

For me, as long as that redneck A/C is working (which it hasn't failed me yet) I'm good to go and not complaining. If ya get hot, just roll the windows down and let the redneck A/C blow thru your hair!
