My check engine light doesnt come on with the key on
Hey Guys, I went for my yearly emissions check and failed due to the check engine light not coming on with the key on but not starting..? I never noticed. The light has never been on in the 5 years I have owned it, so I dont think it is burnt out. And I have always passed before. any help would be GREAT. Oh yea it is a 2002 Durango R/T. Thanks
Take it to your favorite parts store and get it checked out and they will give you a code it's giving. Most likely it's a burnt out bulb but I've never seen it before.
You can also do the key dance (turn the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then back on) and in the odometer place it will give you a code.

I have a code reader. The dmv emissions place says the the light has to work or come on with the key in the on position. Which it should but it doesnt? The only code is the gas cap p0455 from me leaving it running when I fill up.

i would take a look at the hoses at the charcoal canister under the truck.
The light should come on when the PCM does it's self test on start up just like the ABS and brake systems, then they go out after the test if no problems are found.
If the light isn't coming on then most likely the bulb behind the face plate is bad and needs to be replaced. You have to remove the cluster and open the back of it to gain access to the bulbs.

Thanks, I will look into the canister and lines coming and going. Also I will pull the dash apart and the cluster to check on the bulb. I should be able to check it with one of the other bulbs just to see if the bulb is out. Right? Or are they all differant? Well either way, THANKS!
not sure if the bulbs are the same of different, never seen a CEL bulb burn out before, hence never had to open up the instrument cluster

Ok got it all apart to pull cluster and when I did the clust had a raddle. It was a broken LED for the MIL had snapped off. But they are soldered on so I have to find a new cluster.
My next question is when I get a new cluster will my milage be the same since it is digital?
