Heat isn't bad, but all it should be used for is if water is in the fuel and you don't use it unless. Seafoam is a pretty good cleaner.

Anytime you park a motor you should get some fresh gas and mix fuel stabilizer in it to keep the fuel fresh so it doesn't varnish. Get the sh!ty gas out of it and put some new 91 octane fuel in even if it's only 5 gallons. Check the exhaust pipes for any real hot sections that would represent a possible blockage like from a mouse. Double ensure the intake is clear.

It could also be that the transmission is in limp mode so ensure the transmission is shifting correctly.

Change the oil. Hell, change all the fluids! 32,000 on a 1998 still doesn't mean the fluids aren't bad, they still break down over time.

How long has it been sitting?

i did an oil change just before winter along with a full tune up. once its a little warmer, or even some time this week, ill be doing a tranny fluid and filter change along with the band adjustment. and its been sitting since around the first of december without running. i bought it in october hoping to get it on the road fast but i lost my job. and before i bought it it was horribly maintained and sat for about a month. and i meand 132k for miles. my bad

i know its been a while but i got rid of the strange smell. i put on a new muffler and the smell is gone along with a decent amount of the smoke. theres still a bit of white smoke but its also not in the road and the gas is pretty wet. makes me feel better that it was just the muffler and not a head gasket
