Default water pump and fan clutch toast

I'm on vacation and the water pump went dis lodging the belt and had to limp it into a shop. New water pump, HD clutch, belt, fluid and labor $420. But my question is, when I got it back to the Hotel, I popped the hood and I can spin the fan. Is that normal? I thought if you could turn the fan easily by hand that meant the clutch was bad??

It's not locked into place; you should be able to move it by hand. Try spinning it (like you're playing wheel of fortune ) If it spins less than about 1/4 turn then you're fine. It should not spin freely though.

I can spin my fan all the way around freely and it doesn't stop. But I have no problems with cooling or anything else.

Shop also said my fan clutch was fine.

Yes, there has been many discussions regarding it and the final conclusion was that the HD clutches are much louder than the standard duty clutches. That being said though it is cooling that much more so it's a give and take.

its fine as long as you dont have problems or do alot of highway driving, but if you tow or sit in traffic you will likely overheat, that clutch is pretty much worn out

I have sat in plenty of traffic and it has stayed cool. It's weird. I have a 180 deg. stat installed but I doubt that keeps me from overheating. The fan obviously still works when it needs to. When Im sitting idling, the fan spins sufficiently. Like I said, its weird. Been like that for a while.
