Default Power Window stuck in the up position

99 5.9 4x4 SLT

I am going to change my power window (driver's Side) this weekend but the window is stuck in the up position. I believe the window needs to be down so that the regulator could be removed. Is this correct and if so, how do I get it down?

Thanks
Nigel

check the FAQ section for a link to the factory service manuals, the 1998 (98) manual should cover your truck just fine, ill take a look thru and see if i can figure out exactly which section for you to read, but if you check the index file you should be able to figure it out.(id suggest downloading it all for your reference anyway)

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the 98 durango service manual and reviewed the BODY section. Is spells out how to remove and install the regulator (Page 31) but nothing on how to deal with it stuck due to a failed motor. I stopped using the window once I knew it was dying, but after I took it for an inspection, it never budged after that. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!!!

I just had this exact situation on my 98 Durango. Since I see that no one answered the question, let me take a moment to explain how I resolved this one.

You are right, the window needs to be in the down position to be serviced correctly. So if your window is stuck in the up (CLOSED) position, follow these basic steps:

1. Remove the door panel-
2. Using blue painter's tape or packing tape, run large strips of tape over the outside door frame and onto the glass. Use several strips of tape. This will hold the glass in the up position after step 3.
3. Locate the power regulator cables inside the door. These cables run in the window track and connect to both sides of the power window motor. You will see an exposed metal cable that is rather loose. You will also feel another cable protected in a black hard plastic sleeve. Note: the cable in the sleeve should have less slack and feel more taught.
4. Using your cutting tool of choice (I used tin snips, but strong wire cutters will work fine) cut through the cable in the black plastic sleeve. NOTE: The window should drop at this point so position your hand up in the door to make sure your tape holds the window. You DO NOT want to break the glass.

The window should drop and you should be on your way!

Bad thing about that is now u have to replace the whole track? But you are suppose to do that anyway when u replace a motor. The window motor for an 03 mounts different than a 98-01 or 02 possibly

$48 on ebay- you get the whole schibang. New regulator and track all in one kit. It was a no-brainer for me!
