On The Fence
I still haven't decided what I want to do yet. I've been tossing around the idea of maybe trying to swap either a 5.7 or a 6.1 into my Durango, and then I thought about the 6.4. I know the 5.7 will fit but I'm not sure about the 6.1. I haven't really done much research on anything yet due to being busy with work, and I know that there are HEMI swap threads out there.
I have also considered getting a ~2006 Cummins 2500 Ram instead of customizing my Durango.
The thing is that I will be leaving in April for Air Force BMT, and It's not that I want to spend all my money, I just want to have a vehicle I can be proud of. Ultimately if anyone can help me out with information, I'd like to know if a 6.1L or even a 6.4L would fit in my Durango, and if so would it mate up to my existing 545RFE (TCM swap) transmission.
Thanks in advance for anything my fellow forum Brothers and Sisters can provide!

personally, if i wanted a Diesel i would get a Ram, If i wanted a bad azz 5.9 i would keep the Durango..
After talking with a guy that did the HEMI swap i know that the firewall needs to be modded a bit for it to fit in there. Not only that but with the 6.1 and 6.4 you have to take into consideration the weight you are going to be putting on that front end you may have to do some front end work to get it to support the new weight.

The weight is not an overall issue
The 6.1 is the same as the 5.7 in size the 6.4 will be a bit more challenging and take a little more to get in there but will still bolt up transmission with a bit more work.
If I was to do the swap I would do the 5.7 or 6.1

Yeah. I thought about it today, and if I did the 6.1 swap, I want to get a newer Dakota, maybe a 2003 or a 2004 in 2WD to put the 6.1 in and keep the Durango to drive while the Dak is being frankensteined. I would most likely do it after I were to put a 5.7 in my Durango so then I could make the Dak with the 6.1 a garage car and would still have a good DD.
I'm thinking in terms of people wanting to know what motor my Durango has, and telling them it has a HEMI. Anyone who knows cars would know that a HEMI wasn't available in these model years, and be impressed. I want to have a vehicle and make it into something that I can truly call mine instead of just buying something that I want.

Yeah. I was looking at some 2007 Grand Cherokee SRT8s with the AWD and if I put a s/c on it for another 7-8k, I could easily be looking at 800hp and still be lower than the cost of new.
