Default 01 RT Trans has 'Lost' Reverse - Any 'Good' news?

My 01 RT has 86,000 on it. Changed the trans fluid (not filter) Sept. '10, and recently (a couple of months ago) started to noticeably slip from 2nd to 3rd. Last week, got it home after 45 mins of driving ("everything is 45 minutes away!") and when I went to back into my driveway, Reverse didn't engage. I can hear the servo actuating and it says it's in R, and upon messing with all the gears and 4WD, Hi, Low, Neutral, nothing gets Reverse back. I want to know if there's any hope for my tranny that I won't have to rebuild the whole thing or replace the whole thing because, obviously, given our economic times, I have no money. Can anyone relate? Happen to you? Simple fix? (under $cost of replacing a trans) Any feedback is much-appreciated. I have no Check Engine Light.

Sorry to beat a dead horse but I couldn't find anything with the exact same problem after searching this site.

Have you ever had the bands adjusted?

Should have been done (with the filter swap) when you changed the fluid.

Fluid alone doesn't cut it - man can not live on bread alone.

Hey, I had a problem where I'd shift into drive and I would be in 3rd or 4th gear from a stop, and it'd stay in that gear. I changed out the transmission solenoid and now it works amazing. Maybe your solenoid is bad because you mentioned the other gears have issues and obviously it's not shifting into reverse.

This is where I bought the part and these guys who sell it are knowledgeable. I'd send them an email and ask them if this is the right part for you. It's an easy swap. Let me know and I can tell you exactly what to do on changing it. I just did it literally 2 weeks ago!

I hate to say it but you probably didnt do yourself or transmission any favors by not changing the filter with the fluid. If you removed the pan to change the fluid then even less of a reason since the filters are right there.

You wouldnt change the engine oil without changing the filter would you?

This is exactly why I come here, because you guys give me a glimmer of hope that my D isn't totally F'd. I realize I didn't do myself any favors when I just had the fluid changed and not the filter, 'spose I just needed it reiterated to me that was a BAD idea. Thanks you guys, you've helped me.

Update: Heard from the shop, and the seemingly innoffensive transmission trouble I had was diagnosed as a total mechanical failure. I lost reverse, and now I have to rebuild the SOB. Still waiting for a reason as to why the brake caliper seized, but at this moment I don't have an update. Proving yet again, something that didn't feel like it could be major, was major.

Another update: The transmission works fine now that it was torn down and rebuilt, and the driver's side wheel bearing, hub, caliper, pads and rotor were all replaced. And they worked just great. As it turns out, the PASSENGER side was also seizing, just not hard enough to 'notice'. Thus, I got the thing home, smelled burnt pads, and discovered a red passenger side rotor. I cannot believe I fell for a Dodge Durango.
