Default Found This in My Diff

I changed the oil in my rear diff today. Used 75w-90 Mobil 1 and 7 oz. K & W Trans-X LSD additive. It's the 9.25" LSD.

Before opening the diff I actually wasn't real sure I had a LSD. But after inspecting the inside I am nearly positive. I have never worked on any diff before, so I could be wrong. Based on the fact that I can spin two wheels, pretty sure I have a LSD.

Anyways, I found this on the magnet. It is much smaller than it appears. Its length is about the diameter of a nickel. And I was wondering what it may be. I saw identical pieces of metal along the outside circumference of what I assume is the clutch pack in the middle of the ring gear.

I believe it came from the clutches but can anyone tell me exactly what it is and how serious the damage is? This is the only substantial piece of metal I found, I did not go through the oil though.

I have ran the D very hard over the past three years, especially in the winter.

Thanks,
Steven

that looks to me like one of the c-clips from the clutch packs inside the differential. i would get that fixed if i were you, eventually the rest of them will fall off and destroy the rest of the rest of the differential.

Thank you for the reply. Do you mean it is part of a clip that sheared off, or can I pop it back on? How do I fix it? Is it something I can do myself?

i would think i sheared off, the factory equipped LSD is not known for being a very reliable it will likely need to be replaced, iv never had to do it, but unless you are very comfortable with the work have the pros do it

Not what I wanted to hear. Thank you.

Can you tell me which parts on this diagram I should buy? I can infer that I need #13, diff case w/ anti-spin. Any other parts I should I get? The condition of the actual gears looked great.

1. Axle housing 2. Axle cover 3. Cover gasket
4. Axle shafts 5. Axle bearings 6. Axle seals
7. Adjuster 8. Bearing race 9. Bearing
10. Gear kit 11. Pinion washer 12. Thrust washer
13. Differential case 14. Pin 15. Ring & pinion
16. Pinion cup 17. Pinion bearings 18. Shim
19. Pinion spacer

It isn't as expensive as I thought it would be at $217 for the 9.25, but what I am worried about is the labor cost. What kind of labor cost am I looking at here?

Glad I don't have the 8.25, it's $475!! Why is there such a large discrepancy in price between the two?

Could VERY well be a piece of a clutch pack clip.

Also, you can tell if you have a LS set up if when you lift the rear end buy placing a jack under the rear differential so that both wheels are slightly off the ground. Spin one wheel and if the other wheel spins in the same direction then you have a LS carrier. If the other wheel spins the opposite direction it is open.

Here you can see the clip and clutch pack:

No,.......topdog, it doesn't just slide in there.

The clip is a lot bigger than you can see. What you see is the side of the clip that has broken off. The clip has a machined clasp on both sides to keep the clutch packs together inside the carrier. Here you can see the full size of the clip. What has broken off is the side of the clip where it has been pressed into a clasp. The outer edge broke off.

What he is going to have to do is remove the carrier and replace the clutch packs. New clips will come with the kit. I found the clutch packs at www.sixstates.com for like $100 (can't exactly remember). Here is the kit number you need just for the clutch packs (For 1998-1999). Now to do this right you should replace the bearings, however you might just get away for a while without loosing a bearing because you caught it before catostrophic failure.

98SLT4me<---------You have the incorrect diagram! That diagram is for a OPEN GEARING rear differential! You should look in here https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...c-lok-lsd.html and you will find all the parts you need for a 1998 Chrysler Corporate 9.25 LS rebuild.

However personally, I would just replace the clutch packs and hope for a long run, but a shop will want you to replace the bearings and they are correct.

Ya know, the more I think about this the more you must know that differential work is well outside of the normal persons mechanical skill!!! If you decide to tackle this and need some help feel free to PM me.

Thanks! I don't know we'll see. Looking at the thread you linked to it doesn't look like something I couldn't do. Not something I really want to do either.

What would be a fair price for a shop to charge to install a new clutch pack? How long do I have before the diff blows up?
