A double overdrive is what I was referring to where it is not always the final gear. For instance in my Ram 3500 it has a double overdrive and it is both the 4th and 6th gear. Also, as far as the engine and transmission heating up, I guess I was referring to where it would be upshifting and downshifting in and out of Overdrive and that is what I was referring to where it can cause heating.

As for being the pressing the O/D OFF button like shifting down to 4th or 3rd, I believe it's equivalent yes, but I do not believe it's the same thing.

widow, if 4 and 6 are OD what is 5? nothing? not there? or is 6 a typo?

its not exactly like shifting into third on a manual, but it does put the auto trans into third gear (assuming a 4spd OD auto) i have even heard of people using that to get passing gear on the highway when on older auto trans which were slower to downshift when needed

Got sick of looking at posts that have NOTHING to do with the OP's question. If you have questions please post up new threads!

Now I need a new radiator (wish I had the money back then to switch it out). I do have a question though since you brought up tow packages. My Durango didn't come with the tow hitch on it, but when I bought it it had one that had been installed from U Haul, but it did have the transmission cooler, and it has a switch to turn the Over-Drive on or off on the gear shifter. Does that switch mean it has a tow package???
To answer your question, you don't have to have a tow package (in your case it wasn't installed) to have the a auxiliary transmission cooler. However you most likely have most of the tow package cooling system installed which is a plus.

However, sense you installed a aftermarket trans cooler (which is most likely better) you only need to install the cheap radiator. You should actually end up with a better truck doing it the way you did.

Just ordered a new one from Amazon for $130 with shipping. Should I go ahead and throw a new thermostat into the Durango while I have everything apart? It'll be the only part still original in the that system at this point since I've already put in a new water pump. I was thinking about dropping either the 180 or 195 degree thermostat since it was only $6.99 at O'Reilly's...

What do you guys think?

Later...

Brekar...

the 195 is stock many go w/ the 180 and have varying reports, most like it, some cant tell the difference, id say go w/ the 180 for the old reliable 5.9

Do it!

Personally I would put in a lower radiator hose and new T-stat 180 degrees.

I fitted the 180, and the D runs nice with it, also when you flush it, dont forget the small pipe from the the filler neck to the expansion tank, I had to blow mine out with air as it was blocked big time, read on here it can cause problems, and it did.
