Default DTC Question

Hey All,

I bought a used Durango this week. When I test drove it, the CEL came on. When the owner took it to a mechanic, it came up as P0442. They changed the gas cap. Well, had it for a few days, the CEL came on again, same code.

Since it has a new gas cap, where else should I look?

Thanks

Saw that one when I did the search.

I've visually checked all the connections, they look good. I greased the gas cap (even though it's new) and cleared the code, if it comes back I'll have to go to something else.

Barthel, you might want to double-check those hoses coming off of the evap canister under the truck. Mine "looked fine" too, until I actually pulled them off and examined them...the hose going from the canister back to the gas tank actually had a very small split in it that I could not see until I took it off. I simply cut the end off of the hose, and reconnected it and presto...CEL gone...just a suggestion man...might save you money and frustration down the road....

Two words that will be your best bet at finding the problem point for this code... 'Smoke Test'

When I had this problem it was in fact the hose that goes from the front of the throttle body to the EVAP service port under the hood because it was a brittle hose and had a small crack in it so I'd check there too!

The mechanic it was taken to did a smoke test on it, and got the indication at the gas cap. I suspect he put in a Stant cap that may have been a "one size fits most" cap. I'm going tot he dealer tomorrow and picking an OEM cap just in case.

I'll check those lines coming off the canister Tshane, I've checked all the other except those.

Yeah man, check those out for sure...even if they look ok...pull them off and check them out...it could be other things..but from what I have seen, most of the time one of these lines coming off of the canister is the problem. Here is the link to the Evap Hose kit that I bought and used to replace 2 of them. Though turns out the 3rd one, the one coming from the canister to the gas tank was the culprit on mine...but it does not hurt to go ahead and replace them anyway...

Good luck...hopefully you'll get it figured out..and man it feels nice to do it yourself and not have to take it somewhere and pay someone!

Yes and no. I found the cannister that you were talking about, pulled the hoses off and greased them to reseal them, as well as adding some wire tie type clamps. I haven't replaced the gas cap, believe it or not the dealer had to order it. I get it tomorrow, and will swap it out, clear the codes and see how it goes. I'll definitely report back.
