Question how much power?

Ok.. just got my 99 D with the 5.9L engine in it on Friday... there is a slight ticking coming from the engine that I am getting checked by a mechanic tomorrow, but just wondering should a 5.9 be able to 'light up the tires' so to speak... not that I would be doing it, but when I stomped the gas, it just didn't seem to have that much 'oomph'.

These trucks are 12 years old my friend, and when they were brand new, they were only rated for 245HP and 335TQ.

Now, take into account the age of the vehicle and drivetrain loss, you're probably looking at more like 175HP and 250TQ at the rear wheels.

On top of that, most Durango's have fairly substantial tires on them, re: very wide and grippy.

Furthermore, gearing probably has a lot to do with it, for example - 3.92's will probably break free more easily than say 3.55's.

Brakes probably have a lot to do with it as well, front disc/rear drum vs. all-around discs. Depending on year.

On hot days you're down on power and the tires are so sticky... You're probably not going to break loose.

On cold rainy days I've had one tire break loose while going around a very sharp corner, but even on wet pavement - in a straight line - still not happening.

In all reality, I quite like the amount of "get-up-and-go" that these trucks have, what's the point in burning your tires off?

98Rango - Well.. yeah, that would work.. it would work on getting my insurance cancelled and license revoked. LOL
I was just asking if I should expect the engine and driveline to be *able* to do it, tires are WAY to expensive to actually be doing it. Just seeing if my ride is 'sluggish' by standards or something. I will be doing a tune up, minor maintenance on it next paycheck.

Pretty much the only way you're going to do a burnout with these trucks... is if you hook a tow-rope up to the hitch and anchor the other end.

What a dumb ***!

I find it funny that all 4 wheels ended up spinning though because of the open gearing.

isn't that bad for his differential spinning all tires like that? unless he has the AWD version... but agreed... tires are stinkin expensive... if you want more power though you could regear your differential, add a superchips, cold air intake, headers, and new exhaust and boost your power quite a bit that way...
