Default Exhaust manifold rust out

Had leaky exhaust near right manifold. Figured Y pipe shot.
Turns out the manifold rusted at the flange and the bolts fell through.
Exhaust pipe OK but new manifold needed.

NEVER had and exhaust manifold rust thought at the flange.

I just find it perplexing.

Has this been a common issue or I am the lucky one?

Your lucky those bolts didn't come loose while you were driving or you'd have been in for quite a surprise! I've also never heard on any vehicle of the exhaust manifold rusting through, I've heard of there being surface rust but that's almost every vehicle with age.

I'm inclined to ask, has the Durango been underwater, possibly in the ocean anytime in it's life?

Those manifolds on a 5.2/5.9 are very think and very heavy. Rusted through? Wow!!

If it really has rusted through on the manifold, then there has to be rust everywhere on much, Much, MUCH thinner metals elsewhere on the vehicle.

WW, "the ocean"... LOL! Now THAT was funny.

Never in water. Bought from local original owner.
I guess the flange is what rusted out Not the manifold itself.
Does that make sense?

Well here is a picture of the exhaust manifold and as you can see the flange is part of the manifold itself so I'm very confused as to how exactly this happened...

I've heard of this happening up in places where they use salt on the roads, but I've only heard of it on Ford trucks, I guess this was a problem that some of them had for some reason. Never seen it on a Dodge though.

Hence, why I asked if it's been underwater possibly in the ocean... LOL

How is the rest of the truck? Is the chassis rusted to pieces too? I would call up the Car Fox... uh, I mean pull up a carfax to see if this truck has a secret. They all do...
