Default 2003 5.9 timing chain cover

Hello,
I'm working on a friends 03 5.9l Durango. There was a leak coming from the water pump gasket and the timing chain cover. Also there was a ticking noise. How much slack is the timing chain supposed to have? Also, is it necessary to change the oil pan gasket once the timing chain cover has been removed?

Welcome to DF
The timing chain will always have some slack. But since you are already there, you may as well replace the chain.

thanks for the quick reply! I just got back from autozone, I got a new timing chain set. The tension is much more tighter than the old one. This is a very helpful forum. Thanks!
