Default Droning noise at highway speeds?

I havea 1999 Durango at about 100 km/h (55 mph) there is a loud droning noise. It seems to be more speed dependent then RPM dependent since I can be accelerating or just crusing but once I hit 100 km/h the noise starts. The dealership said it's becuase the new tires I put on are too heavy. However I installed Yokohama Geolander A/T Plus II which are recommender replacement equipement. I know a few people with them and they have no problems.

I have TOYO Open Country A/T .. quite aggressive also as far as tread ... I doubt it's the tires ... unless the YOKO's look like Mickey Thompson MUD digger tires or something .... not too sure what it can be .... sorry .

I'm wondering if you noticed this before and just tuned it out or if there is an issue with your muffler maybe going bad. I have a 2000 with the 5.7L and when I drive I know from 20-40 MPH it's going to be kind of loud in the cabin, but over 55MPH it quiets done and drones . Part of that is owning a V8. That's what they do and I had forgotten that lovely sound since I sold my 69 Charger years ago. I would have your exhaust system checked to be certain it's not leakingor time for replacement. You may want to have the rear end checked for gearing issues, but I don't think it's tires either unless you really upsized, which doesn't sound like the case. Let us know what you find. Personally I'm thinking about a Magnaflow cat back exhaust down the road a bit.

The tire is the same size as the OEM, its not aggressive either it's primarrly a street tire. In fact, when I first got them I was amazed at how my quiter the truck was especially at highway speeds. It was a few months after I got the tires that the droning noise started. I'll have the exhaust system looked at, thanks.

Sounds like a classic U-joint problem or failure. Have them checked out by a qualified technician.[sm=confused06.gif]

Ok one other thing I ofrogt about , until it resurfaced today, is that I sometimes get a LOUD clicking noise at when accelerating. It sounds like it coming from under the truck towards the rear. It sounds like something binding or metal catching on metal or maybe metal trying to flex. It is also speed dependent. However, it happens very rarely and they is no differece in the way the truck performs. No vibration or stiffness in the steering or while cornering. Just that odd noise. It doesn't sound like CV joints going bad with a clicking noise, the sounds much too lound and sounds like it's coming from the center of the vehicle. I had the dealer look that the exhaust but they said noting is lose and it's all fine, but I'm beginning to suspect otherwise.

I'm thinking U joints also and is there any possibility of Axel splines stiping loose? Or a the rear end going out? Notice any pools of new drops of oil/grease in the driveway/parking area? may be the rear end or a tranny case.

I think Dave is right. Axel splines, Drive line splines, or U-joint. Also have your rear end fluid replaced. Maybe they put in the wrong fluid. Most shops here do it for $20. Also get under the truck and grab your drive line by the U-joints and push up and down and turn it and look for slippage or movement. This could show wear or a bad joint.[sm=bounceybounce.gif]

Alright I'll have a look. I've always taken it to the dealer for maintence so I would hope they would put in the right fluids. There are no leaks or drips anywhere. The odd thing about the noise is the last time I heard it before yesterday was back in December. The only times it ever seemed to have happened was just after start up. Actually, it all started about 2 years ago when I was getting off the highway and was waiting at a stop light all of a sudden I hear a noise like someone dropping screws into a coffee can. I accelerated slowly and heard this noise that sounded like something was wrapped around my drive shaft was was hitting the under side of my truck. It was a soft ticking noise that was speed dependent. It went away after a week and by the time I took it into the dealer they of course couldn't find anything.
