Default ? about axle gearing

so i was lookin at different gear ratios. i have the 3.55 and wanted to upgrade and my question is this... if i put in these 4.10 gears do i have to buy 2 sets, one for the rear axle (9.25) and for the front? or do i just purchase for the rear... and how does that work along with running 4x4?

you need 2 sets for a 4x4 if you want to do it, so take w/e price you found for one set and double it

And to top that, install labor/gaskets/correct fluid/etc. Its a tough decision when it comes to gearing, but if you plan on owning your D till its dead then it wouldnt hurt to invest in a nice set.

Default A question about your question.

srch4me,

What are your thoughts on the change? I too have the 3.55 gearing in a 4x4 and was considering the change for towing, but I'm not sure what would be better a Superchips or the new gears (assuming of course that I can only afford to do one)

Just curious!

the superchips if i recall correctly and someone can feel free to correct me, tunes your engine to perform better while towing or whatever you tell it to program for... whereas when you upgrade your gearing you actually add more hauling capacity. with the 3.55 you can haul 4300 pounds runing a 5.2. or 5600 with a 5.9 on 3.55 gears... with 3.92 gears on a 5.2 its 5600, and on the 5.9 is about 7200...

for towing i would do the gears it will cause the engine to rev a bit higher while driving, but will make it easier to move the load

You will have to get a ring and pinion for both axles, a master install kit, gasket sealant and fluids.

I had mine done by a home town shop for like like $1500 +tax.

Rear:
