there is no way to test the sensors just replace them

and no being sold in oregon does not mean you have the slacker emissions bc im pretty sure my truck has CA emissions on it and it was sold in NJ and hasnt left. you have to check, the sensors will be on the manifold pipes (before the Y) if you have CA emissions, if you dont then it will be between the Y and the Cat, they arent hard to find, just follow the exhaust pipes.

p.s. if Denso brand is OEM rockauto has em for $40 a piece

Got the code checked and was for sure, bank one, low, o2 sensor.
That is before cat correct

Actually, there is a way to test if the sensor is sending the proper voltage....

Whats the best way to get to the plug and the end that actually goes into the pipe? I messed around under the rig attempting to loosen it up with a adjustable wrench (didnt have a large enough crescent wrench) but didnt get anywhere.
Do I need to get one of those custom oxygen sensor sockets and a joint attachment on a ratchet?

you could get an oxygen sensor ratchet, but i would try a box wrench first, and then a deep well socket if the plug is smaller than the hex flats on the sensor (im not sure how they compare size wise)

Depends, Bank 1 only refers to the drivers side.

Now there are like 3 different emission set ups so we would actually have the exact code for diagnosing it for you. Anyway Bank 2 is passenger side and the code for instance bank 1 - 1/2 means drivers side pre-cat O2 sensor, and 2/2 means after cat O2 sensor.

Anyway, I went to www.rockauto.com and bought Denso OEM ones which are factory in these and paid like $60 for both of mine and just installed all and was done with it.

ok let me clarify what hydra said bc he let jack do the typing again, and that causes contradictions.

im only familiar with 2 of the setups, CA and regular (i believe its referred to as 48 state) emissions

CA emissions has 2 banks of sensors 1 and 2,
bank 1 is the drivers side
bank 2 is the passenger side

sensor 1 is precat
sensor 2 is postcat

so sensor 1/1 would be drivers side pre-cat
sensor 1/2 would be drivers side post cat

2/1 passenger side pre cat
2/2 passenger side post cat,

if you only have one bank (48 state emissions) you will only have bank 1 codes, and you will be 1/1 or 1/2 where

1/1 is pre cat and
1/2 is post cat

Pay the extra $$$ and buy the correct ones from the dealer. There are subtle variations between different manufacturers that will affect the performance of the sensor. Also, buy the correct socket to remove the old sensor, it'll save you massive headaches if you break the old one taking it out.

FWIW, my 4.7 (2003) consistently gets 17.5 MPG with most of it being thruway & country roads. My upstream sensor went bad (threw a CEL code as well) and had similar symptoms as yours. A couple other things to check for gas mileage wasters are:
Fan clutch frozen (fan never freewheels).
Poor tire inflation / worn tires.
Bad alignment.

My mileage increased over 1.5 MPG after doing balljoints, new Michelin tires, and a GOOD alignment. I also keep the tires a little hard (38-40 lbs) which may help some.

Who is then? I am sure the Mopar packaged O2 sensor has the manufacturer logo on it. Is it possible for you to tell us what yours says? Please?
