Because I don't like the sound of the fan when it is activated. I prefer to hear the exhaust sound and not the big rig sounding whoosh of the fan. And it's not like its that difficult to place the fan nut on the threaded shaft and tighten it by hand. The engine spins in a direction that will automatically tighten the fan. All I have to do is pull over.

Whatever your decision, make sure you cooling system is performing normally.

My recommendation is to add a secondary efan if you remove the mechanical. The oem efan only comes on with a/c or when the pcm says the engine is starting to reach above normal operating temperatures which is usually near the 210 mark. You do not want the temp to reach 210 as the pcm will put your engine in cripple mode to prevent the engine from overheating.

I am thinking of replacing my mechanical fan with a 2nd oem dodge fan. They are selling them on Ebay for $75.

As I mention in my first post, my upgraded tune includes the order for the fan to come on at 186F, and I have a 180 thermostat.

Do you have the link to the ebay fans?

I like the setup the grand cherokee uses with the 4.7, hydraulic powered off the power steering pump with some kind of controler so it dosnt spin when its not needed

its wasn't on my vehicle. I worked on a Grand Cherokee a few months ago, I cant remember if it was a 2000 or a 2002. it had the 4.7 with a stuck valve. anyway the factory cooling fan was hydraulicly driven off the power steering pump. I knew this because the previos month I had been dealing with a power steering leak on it and realized the power steering pump lines also went to the cooling fan and when running at idle the fan was sometimes not moving. when it did come on it had some variability to the speed of it, would slowly speed up from a standstill hold at a given speed for a bit then slow back down some for a few seconds then turn right off.

thats actually an interesting idea (that i have never seen before) but i honestly think its alot more complicated than it needs to be, your probably better off with either a clutch or electric fan

no doubt its more complicated and more failure points, not something you would retrofit into something unless you have weird clearance issues like the GC has. blow a power steering line somehow and no more fan, you can drive without power steering but without the fan you arn't driving far. the GC I worked on the guy had changed out the power steering pump cause it died, then had leaks because the stupid fittings on the power steering lines have non replaceable o-rings built into the fitting so it had a slow leak out of the fitting, not past the threads but between the tube and the tube nut.

it is really cool though.
