I took my fan off!
I took off my mechanical fan, leaving only the electric one in place. I already have a 180 thermostat, and when I had my tune from Hemifever, he set the fan to come one at 186f. I ran around the block twice and then idled in the driveway until it came on. It seemed to move a lot of air, comparable to other cars and trucks I've had with only electric fans. It ran for about 2 minutes and shut off. Seems to function fine.
I wonder why Dodge seemed to want a mechanical too? Towing?
Anybody else done this?

Typically, the stocker elec fan does not move enough air on it's own to be the single fan for everyday use.
The aux fan was added to the 2000+ to solve the over hot running temps the 98/99s seemed to be plagued with.

Here is a link that Shrpshtr325 gave to me for a aftermarket controller for electric fans http://www.spalusa.com/store/Main.as...tem=FAN-PWM-V3) , you really need to add another or put the mechanical fan back on. Only running it around the block doesn't heat all the coolant in the system, you would need to drive farther and that wouldn't be good cause you could overheat it pretty easy.
I don't see why I would need a different controller, my PCM is working it fine now.
I've read about people using Jeep Cherokee fans that cool better and plug right into the harness. Does anybody know which year/type/model I would want?

That controller will run 2 fans from that company, I don't know of anyone who has put 2 fans on the factory pcm. You really should have 2, just in case one would quit you're not totally screwed in the middle of nowhere with an overheated engine. Personally I wouldn't trust just one electric fan.
Next, all vehicles that are considered "Trucks" have mechanical fans to be applicable for towing and heavy duty use, that is why cars do not have them anymore.
LIES! the electric fan will be more than enough if you arent doing a whole lot of towing or getting stuck in standstill traffic. I removed my clutch fan in the spring and have still not had any problems. Just keep the an with you at all times in case it gets warm, and then you can just put it back on.

Well I don't plan on towing at all. I guess you never know when you'll be in standstill traffic, but it is an unlikely situation for me.
The tune from Hemifever is awesome! Makes it feel more responsive, more like it should have been from the factory.
Where would you even put a second fan?

the clutch fan is definitely overkill for most daily driving situations, however the stocker electric fan will not always be enough for you either, especially in the summer when it gets really hot (90-95+*F).
you can put a 2nd fan in behind the stock electric fan, closer than the clutch fan was, but its the same idea. Also iirc the stock e-fan does NOT cover the entire radiator, that right there should be flag that there are better options out there.
now for the winter(at least in the northern parts of the country) you could probably get by without any fans on the truck, but i personally wouldnt try it.

+1 Sharps. Why bother chancing it with just an electric fan? By the time you notice that the fan isn't working you've already overheated the truck. With a clutch fan if the motors turning so is the fan (99% of the time anyways!)
I doubt that the gas mileage savings is substantial, sure you *may* pick up a few HP but at what price? These trucks are already mediocre in the cooling department to start with, why chance overheating a motor, getting stranded on the road, etc.?
Just my opinion anyways....
