Default rear headliner vents not blowing cold

I have a 98 durango and like the title says, my rear headliner vents don't blow the cold air when my ac is turned on. the front vents are ice cold, but the air from the headliner is warm at best. i don't have the separate ac/heat controls in the headliner, just the fan speed control. i've tried searching for help and i've read some things about the blend door being stuck or broken. I don't know where this could be located so that i can try and move it by hand. any help?

As you have stated, I am very certain there is no blend door because the 1998 was a fan - A/C only with no heat option. I would ensure that you are full on freon first. Next would probably a expansion valve issue would be my first guess.

I would agree with hydra, It does show a expansion valve and a evaporator too. The expansion valve would be a good start.

Where can I access the expansion valve?

Should be close to the evaporator up in the overhead.

But first look at your freon level.

Ok, ill check freon first. I didn't think I had to if the panel vents blow cold. Can i access the rear expansion valve via the rear of the headliner vents where the air comes in? I wanted to pull the plastic screen off to get access but I didn't want to break it. Any spot in particular?

I don't know for sure off hand, but download the 1998 service manual and check into it. There is 2 pages for the entire download then you put all of them in order in a single file: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=c...3f6w4a6wme00,1

ok thanks. this manual says that the expansion valve is under the rear passenger floor by the door sill. i just checked the lines under the truck going to the expansion valve and they're cold. i cant check the lines coming out of the ex valve yet since I have to remove interior panels. hopefully changing the expansion valve will fix it.

Just to throw another option in, I have a 2001 that had the same issue, ice cold air up front, but the rear air was luke warm at best. It ended up being a relay, which was located inside the tailgate on the passenger side.

yeah, my durango just has the evaporator in the rear, no separate ac or heat controls. i just had the freon levels checked today, and the levels were good. also, i checked the lines going to the rear evaporator and they're cold. so the expansion valve is working fine. the air coming out the headliner vents is still warm. could the problem be with the evaporator itself? possibly clogged or dirty coils? would that be preventing the cold air from the lines to reach the rear of the cabin?
