Default Need help with my D (trans)

So I bought my first D at an auction so I dont have any vehicle history. Its a 2003 SEL 4x4 5.9L. The tranny seems to have a hard time moving. When it does find a gear it sputters like if im driving a stick. It has trouble finding all gears. After a couple minutes I lose all gears and it doesnt find any gears at all. The 4x4 switch on the dash does switch from 4x4 Hi/Lo, but doesnt go to N. Im assuming the tranny was just driven till it took a sh@&. There is no CEL on the cluster. Should I just buy a used tranny and install it?

Thanks to all who can help me out. So far this forum looks great!

do you have enough fluid in the trans? i would check that first, but if low fluid isnt your problem you want to get in touch with Master Tech he is the transmission expert

Finicky transmissions are usually a transmission output sensor or a TV cable adjustment. Also you could try a TPS.

It really does sound to me like the fluid is low, make sure you are going through the entire gear ranges and always check the level while in Neutral, also if you need to add fluid only add it while in Neutral. It sounds to me like it either needs a TV cable (or kick-down cable) adjustment.

It also sounds like possibly one or both of your bands are out of adjustment. Really it wouldn't hurt to drop the pan and see what it looks like inside and see if anything is attached to the magnet that shouldn't be. Wouldn't hurt to replace the filter while you're in there too.

Check to make sure your Overdrive spring in the valve body is in tact because this could be a major issue as it's something that I've seen before and is an easy fix. It sounds to me like you are having a transfer case issue at the same time because it not going into N is an issue in itself. It could have excessive binding inside and causing it to seem like you're having transmission problems.
