'02 SLT,5.9L, AWD, 46RE

Need some advice with my transmission. I've had these symptoms for quit some time, even after the last band adjustment / filter change/ fluid swap about a year ago.



Here are the symptions:

• Harsh P-R engagement. P-D does not seem to be a problem.
• Harsh 2-3 & 3-2 while driving slowly (i.e., driving in neighborhood or city driving. I don't notice it when accelerating quickly)
• I haven't noticed a surge in RPM.

Simple things I've checked:

• U-joints (they appear to be in good shape and the harsh engagements are not present between any other gears)
• Fluid level (checked after driving, going through gears, flat surface, etc...)

The shop manual mentions the Lockup Solenoid for the 2-3, 3-2 issue, but mentions other options for the P-R issue. Any thoughts? How difficult is the Lockup Solenoid? Is this something I can tackle on my own as a confident "driveway hero" or should I take it in? Other than a few "drop and swaps," I don't have much transmission experience.

 

I am having the same exact problems but have no idea as well. I have checked everything and found everything to be in good order.

 

You both may have a sticking governor and transducer. The harsh engagement in reverse could be the idle maybe to high.

 

Do a TV cable adjustment and replace the transmission output sensor. Look at page 21-308 thru 21-309 for the Throttle Valve Cable Adjustment Page 1599-1600. This is in the 2002 Durango Service Manual.

 

I have a 98 durango 5.2 L slt.. Would i be having the sane trouble?

I replaced the output sensor... No noticeable change.

Adjusted TV cable ... Fixed the shifting problems. (still have a clunk from P-R though)

Now my tranny shifts so smooth, you can barely feel it yet I still have plenty of power and kickdown. My question... Is there excessive strain on the tranny with this super smooth shifting? My rpms are saying pretty low but I still have plenty of power. Just want to make sure my adjustment is correct.
