Default Stalling in gear

ust last night I noticed that when I was at a stop light my RPM would go high then low and when driving it felt like when she was changing gears alil rough (if that makes sense). This morning she started up just fine but as soon as I put into drive it stalled. Turned her off and started right up and then in drive stalled again....did this three times and I gave up. Last night when I was at a stop light I thought TPS because when I first bought her I had to change it, so it felt alil familiar, but back then (5 yrs ago) she never stalled. Help! woman in distress.

Hi, she is a 2002, 4.7 engine and yes a 4x4. This happens as soon as I put into gear, if I quickly put back into park she stays on....but only in park and neutral she doesn't stall.

it sounds to me like the torque converter is locking up causing the stalling, i would lean towards the tc solenoid, but pm master tech and see what he says, he is the transmission expert.

I read your message, and going to agree with sharp as well. The converter with cause a lockup problem when you'll at a idle and stalls in any gear but park or neutral. You could also have a valve body problem too, but without any codes I'm only guessing.

Thanks so much for the responses. For some reason now that it is not raining she stays on, but I'm too scared to take her for a ride and get stranded. I have someone coming down on Monday to look at her and I will most deffinately let you guys know the outcome. I am so lost without her :-(

After a shop having the truck ALL day they THINK it's a sensor or solenoid but they want a second opinion. I should have taken her straight to a tranny shop but I went with a place I've been dealing with for years. STRESSED

What is the life expectancy of the transmission in a Durango? I was told that my 02 is at the end of life expectancy. Not a good thing, I love my Durango and don't want to give her up. They suggested I change the solenoid pack because it is the cheaper of the two (rebuilt transmission).

If it were me I'd start with the lock-up solenoid but usually when that goes it throws an MIL and a code. As for the life expectancy, I got a good 11 years out of mine, I'm currently awaiting my new torque converter to come in stock from local transmission shop.

I got about 130,000 miles out of mine and luckily it's just soft parts and a torque converter and a rebuild will solve my problems. My problem was just the opposite of yours, I have no O/D gear...
