Spoke with a source for a low mileage tranny and he mentioned flushing it and I cringed. you guys also have to consider we have sales tax out here for everything. Here most shops wont warranty the parts if I provide the parts.

Ccthomp...You're right, many won't warranty it if you bring your own parts, but honestly, you won't get much more than a 30 days no matter where you have it done. I'd proabably go with the low mileage used transmission rather than paying those goobers to rebuild yours. Hopefully, the screwing you'll take will at least be minimized that way.

Your right, in Utah it takes the same time as Virginia, accept for getting hard to find parts if needed? This is where I think they take a lot of people to the cleaners and claim they need all when they only need basic rebuilds.

Regardless, I see your point. I agree that it should be cheaper, however what we think is different to reality, and when generic people shop for price well that's different to "us" people that know better. Shops prey on people wold wide and we both know that. This is why we are here to help inform people when they are getting taken, however dictating a certain price is hard to state in any place.
Actually, the parts do come from the same place(s). Transmission shops all have access to roughly the same parts sources/wholesalers. That's what I meant by "they all come from the same place". Not that everybody buys from the same wholesaler (if so, boy would I love to be that guy), but that they all have access to the same quality parts, and roughly the same prices. If I buy a high quality kit here in Missouri that costs $250, you can get the same kit for the same price in California. You might pay an extra 10% for sales tax there, but the price for the kit will be roughly the same.

And the point I was trying to make wasn't that he shouldn't pay more than $xxxx dollars, but rather that almost every mechanic you talk to these days is a thief and a liar, and aren't even a little bit ashamed of it. I'm sure there are still honest mechanics out there, but they're pretty few, and far between.

I'd love to see CCThomp get a square deal, where he actually paid for the labor and parts the job cost, rather than paying the extra $1000 he's getting in his estimates, but it won't happen.

Are they giving you a 30 day or something on it? ****s n giggles,I called my fav salavage here( I know I'm way far away) they have 6 Durango's in the yard,He'll sell a trans for $350-$400,wants your core and he'll give 30 days exchange if you have any problems

One place will give a 100k warranty if the install is done right and and place will give a 30 day warranty but i have the option of buying a year warranty. My concern with going that route is if something else crops up ill be right back where i'm at.

Most salvage yards are good for anywhere from 30 to 90 days, and generally you'll have no trouble getting them to honor that warranty. His real problem is R&R. Not having a place to do it himself, or the confidence to take on the job, he's stuck having it done in a shop.

As for me helping him....I really wish I could, but it's an unrealistic distance to even consider it. I live in SW Missouri, and it's a 2 day (or one 30 hour shot) 1 way. I can't tell you how many times I've "helped" people do things like this (meaning, I usually do it, they help, and hopefully learn a little in the process) and again, would love to in this case, but it just isn't realistic.

If he knew someone with a garage, or shop, where he could take his time doing it himself, and learning in the process, he'd be a step ahead, but even that probably isn't realistic. A first timer doing a rebuild on a tranny...not sure I want to see him take that on as a first mechanic project.

This is why I've done all my own mechanic work most of my adult life.

That is very true.

Still disagree with you on the parts though, I mean if one place puts in a rebuilt torque convertor verses a new or even oversized you are talking lots of price difference. What I am getting at isn't that the kits are different money, well they are all close, but the cost of performance over OEM and what a shop uses verses a different shop. They are all different.
