he is right, almost all NEW transmissions ARE electronically controlled, but these are not new trucks by most standards and do not have new transmissions in them.

This was in a forum talking about 95-00 dodges. I realize most of the new vehicles are more complex and have computer controlled systems. (1 reason I don't touch the wife's Honda) but c'mon almost all 95-00 dodges have computer controlled trannies that adjust for them. He just kept going on and on about how no one after 97 needed to adjust the bands.

lol hes wrong, dodge used transmissions with bands up until at least 2003, might even have spilled into 04 or later, but the 5.9 that was sold in the durango in 2003 has bands which need adjustment.

The dodge truck lineup did not get any electronic controlled transmissions until the 4.7 came along in 2000, and it was far from an immediate and complete switch

Just bought a 2000 with the small v8. Tranny won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear. I did read the sticky on the trans. What is the most likely problem(were would you start)?

I would start with the TV cable, making sure it is adjusted correctly. here is the Thread most recently posted about it:

I would also drop my pan and check out the fluid/magnet. If I drop the pan and there are chunks of metal attached to the magnet, I know something is wrong and the tranny might need a rebuild. Also, you have checked the fluid correctly correct? This messed me up just yesterday, I had to check it 4 times in a row in a one minute span to finally figure out my fluid was low.

if none of that, I would adjust the rear band which controls the tranny's 3-4th gears, unless this is one of those electronically controlled trannies....shrpshtr would know better than myself.

mr.bubblemaker you could have one of 3 engines sold in that model year the 4.7, the 5.2 or the 5.9, i am going to assume you dont have the 5.9 since you said small v8, but that still only gives you a 50/50 chance of my information being helpful, your best bet is to start your own thread and include all of the relevant information, and that you have properly checked the transmission fluid level

Yep these transmissions (except for the 45RFE and 545RFE) are mostly hydraulic controlled, however have electric controlled shifting. You can actually unplug the trans and shift it through 1-3 gears manually without throwing a code.....believe it or not!

That guy's an idiot!

The 46RE, 44RE, and 42RE have bands in them and require adjustment period....LOL

Once a bolt is broke loose you can get that sucker spinning with one hand and just keep going. When we rebuilt engines in auto tech in high school I utilized the crap out of that sucker. They are handy, nothing wrong with the old school ways
