Default Surging/slipping

Yesterday I drove my 2003 Durango (4.7) to pick up some tires at the coast. The drive was about 1.5 hours each way. During the drive back, I noticed that the engine was surging between 600 to 1000 RPM when stopped at stop lights. I figured that my need to clean the IAC was finally catching up with me. Halfway through the drive home felt like either the torque converter was locking and unlocking or the tranny was occasionally slipping. After much thought and yacking with fellow motor heads, I'm suspecting that the TPS might have checked out but I don't have a CEL. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so, what was the fix?

I had somewhat of a similar problem and it definitely was the TPS. When driving, the truck would literally feel like a boat motor with all the surging/slipping while driving. It also had the weird/jumping at idle. I replaced the TPS, then reset the PCM and good to go!

the TPS does not always throw a code when it goes bad, replace it and reset the computer, we can go from there if the problem persists.

+1 shrp, i completely forgot to say that when the TPS (or another sensor) goes bad that it doesnt always throw a CEL, I hade 3 codes last time i checked(with no CEL on) and it was all sensors bad or unplugged

Cool, thanks for the help. I'm gonna change the TPS and see if that fixes the issue.

Just remember to reset the PCM, otherwise, even if that is the problem, you won't know!
