Default White Gunk in Oil Filler Cap

I live in snow country with extended freezing conditions. While adding oil recently I noted white gunk inside the filler cap. I've had my share of blown head gaskets and found no milk in the radiator or case. I am noy over heating. The only issue noted is valves tapping hard on cold morning start-ups.

My assumption is moisture plus heat are creating the filler cap.

Is there something else I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

ive seen some people say its moisture but not really too sure. i get the same stuff on my cap as well as on the pcv valve. ive just always ignored it. i also know that for some engines (not too sure which) they made a kit to relocate the pcv valve but i dont know if it makes the white gunk go away. hope someone else can chime in on this.

krazybob,

$20 bet you have a 4.7l

$40 bet you have never had the TSB ran that prevents the "snot" buildup you are seeing.

It is harmless and due to ventilation, emulsification and deterioration. Fix it via the simple TSB procedures or ignore it. As for me, I'd fix it. Either way, nothing to seriously worry about.

Search on TSB 4.7 Snot and you should find your answers further.

HTH,
