02 durango awd hummming noise at 40mph, tranny was rebuilt 3000 miles ago, fluid is full, it sounds like its coming from the middle to the front area, gonna have the wheel bearings checked and t-case and front diff checked in the a.m. it seems to stop once i lay off gas pedal i hope its not the tranny
had the mechanic that works at the dealership take it for a run says its not the tranny so if it gets worse ill bring it back to him, it maybe just bearing noise but gonna do some further looking into
Nick
Does you durango have a 46RE or 545RFE transmission? If its the 46RE, Yes the noise is coming from the transmission. Because there is a large bearing in the overdrive unit that goes bad and sounds like the problem is in the transfer case or diff.

Nick,
I have the same thing going on with my truck. I am pretty sure ti is my Front DS being bad and my u-joints are probably bad as well. I would check the front DS.
Put the truck in park, get under the truck, and try to turn the front DS by hand, if it moves at all, it is bad.

Okay, so its the 44or 46RE transmission. Its an easy fix. Only the overdrive unit comes off to make the repair. What type of warranty do you have for the rebuild transmission? If the transmission was replace at the dealership, reman trans are 3years or 100k. If they overhaul the trans, its 1 year or 12k. Also adding the problem noise didn't start until after the transmission was either replaced or a rebuild. You can also tell who ever worked on the transmission, that you got is from a dodge transmission tech of 25 years. Also ask the tech, would he continue to drive this durango if it were his with his kids and wife or mother?
