Default 99 5.2 electrical problems

99 5.2l, Ok, this is the long version, sorry. Check engine light came on, cam position sensor circuit malfunction or something close, the light had been going off and on for a couple of weeks but no problems. Drove it a week ago, light came on, parked, would not start. Towed it home, first changed crank position sensor, followed by Ignition pickup, then coil. Tried unhooking the battery to reset the computer. Somewhere in there I checked to make sure it wasn't a fuel problem, I can hear the fuel pump and sprayed starting fluid in it to see if it would pop at all, nothing. Short of trying Ecu/ECM, what to do? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

There isn't a rotor sitting around anywhere? Just checking lol. You should check for spark at the plugs, If none (sounds that way if it wont fire with starting fluid. Check for spark at the distributor from the coil wire.....no? check for spark at the coil....no? Did you get the sensors plugged in all the way...especially the crank sensor.

Did you pull the distributor out? It needs to be put back in exactly the way it came out, rotor position and dist body.

sounds like the one i bought, had to get it started first. i replaced cap and rotor, nothing, then i replaced the coil and it started. the coil is supposed to be held on by either bolts or in my case, philips head screws. i would try to replace the coil, auto zone has em for cheap money. and while ur under there replace cap and rotor while ur at it

+1

Check for spark!

Also pull a spark plug and connect to it's wire and look for spark at that plug. If no spark suspect a coil or wires. If it is orange spark again suspect the coil or wires, should be blueish.

Replaced the rotor, I pulled the cap back off to make sure the distributor was turning, that all works, no spark at plugs or coil. I pulled fuses and relays and swapped them. Truck turns over all day, no spark anywhere... I unhooked connections at crank and ignition sensors and plugged everything back in. Unplugged and plugged back in new coil, nada.

You can check for battery power at the coil...should be a green wire...I don't remember if it will have power all the time without the engine running or just a couple seconds when the key is turned on. Anyway a test with a helper is ideal..unplug the coil hook up the test light turn the key on and it should light...also while cranking. If you have power there next I would check for a crank signal, a scan tool comes in handy to see if you have a rpm signal while cranking...does the tach move up to a couple hundred rpm's while cranking?

Have fuel at fuel rail. Checked for power at the coil, I do get power from the green wire for a second when it cranks. The tach does not move when turned over. I have an OBD II but nothing else, I will look into getting or borrowing something if need be but I don't know what to get

Seems like the computer is not getting a signal from the crank sensor. I know you said you replaced it but you could have a bad part. You might want to pull it out and make sure that it is not rubbing the flywheel, and that the wires are all intact. If there is nothing standing out at you as a problem exchange it for another just to be sure. I work at an auto repair shop and there are times you get a bad new part, then waste time looking for something else thinking it can't be that, I just put a new one on.

might want to check for continuity between the sensor connector and the pcm if replacing the sensor doesn't get you anywhere. I also see in your original post that you mentioned the cam sensor circuit was giving a code. Is that resolved already?
