Installing a Powertrax 1220-LR Without R&P gear removal?
I've seen videos of this being done on YouTube and I even watches Stacey David from Gearz (formerly Trucks) do it on his TV show. Only thing is, some have shown that the ring gear be ground down a little on the inside edge where the pinion apparently makes no contact with the ring, to get the cross pin out. I would assume my gears are straight as they don't wine, but how safe can this really be? I have 3.55 gears currently if that helps anything. Thanks in advance! - Joe
You can clearance the teeth that are in the way, but keep it MINIMAL!! You will need to use some marking compound on the teeth that need to be clearanced. Check your pattern and make sure you dont clearance into where the pinion contacts the ring. Make sure that the pin has enough room to be able to get it back out.
After doing this I like to take some clean gear lube and squirt it all around the gear before puting the diff cover back on the make sure the gears are wet, not sure if it really does anything just makes me feel better.
Well then after I spray it down with brake cleaner, do the install, and then prepare to re fill it up with oil, how would I make sure all the brake cleaner is out without taking the pinion and ring gear out? Just wipe out what I can? I don't know how much the brake cleaner can change the protective properties of the gear oil.
Brake clean dissolves easily so just douse the whole rear-end with brake clean wipe off what you can and take some air pressure with an air nozzle and dry off the entire thing. I wouldn't imagine brake clean would change the properties too much, but why risk it.
Hmm okay. Thanks for the input guys! I'm sure you've seen my previous threads basically wringing everyone out for their knowledge so I don't screw things up. I really appreciate the help.
