Default Question for Durango experts 2003 4WD

hello all,

My durango 2003 SLT 4WD has a bad front differencial which is damaged already - the question can i just cancel the 4WD and use the car or this can not be done.

i know i have to replace all the differencial but instead of wasting money, i need to cancel it and use the car as 2WD for timebeing.

thanks a lot

I would imagine as long as you don't use the 4x4, wheel bearings are good, everything is tight, and remove the front driveshaft u should be ok. I'm not 100% sure on that so is wait for another members opinion

If the gears are stripped there really isn't much more damage you can do if the front driveshaft was removed

It dose depend on the damage. If some loose parts get into the gears it could lock up the front axle going down the road. That could be bad....

thanks guys for the feedback, the differential is bad and makes loud sound, i just thought that if i can remove the driveshaft i will be okay, the gears are damaged, and i think i will have to remove the axles too so that the front tires are free , but the question is that doable , cuz i didn't find used differencial here in middle east ,

dear dolittle, i think also i have to place it on 4HI , so i cheat the engine computer which doesn't allow the car to drive unless on AWD...

is that right?

thanks a lot

in order to drive without the front driveshaft in it needs to be in 4wd correct.

i would advise against pulling the axles out and driving it that way, i believe the axle nuts are part of the wheel bearing retaining system and without them they could potentially shift (im not 100% on this but i remember reading something about this at some point)
