thank you hydra, i thought the axle going through the hub was important somehow.

Yes the base of the wheel bearing on a 4X4 is connected to the spindle via 3 bolts, however the wheel bearing is a 2 piece bearing set up. See the end of the CV Half Shaft inputs into the bearing through the center, then you have a main nut on the outside end. This main hub nut then presses the second and primary bearings together giving the wheel bearing pre-load and ensuring against it's separation. The rear end of the bearing is connected to the spindle. So you are incorrect in your analogy.

You are correct. I didn't think of that. I just glad the OP didn't have to do this it could of been a crash. Thanks for the heads up.

I actually ripped apart a 4X4 wheel bearing assembly to see it they could be rebuilt, which I am sad to say they can't because of design.
