Default CV Boot

So i noticed today that my passenger CV Boot is ripped. How do I know if you have to replace the joint or axle (not sure what you would actually have to replace).?

Replace the entire axle. It's not too expensive and a lot easier.

So i am now wondering if i need to replace both front axles. I grabbed each axle shaft and they both have play in them (they move in and out a lil bit). Is it normal to have some play in them?

Is it the upper boot or the lower? I had the lower booty tear last winter. It went a couple months before I changed it. I cleaned the bearings up and regreased them no problems.
The lower boot covers the joint that has the big bearing. The upper covers the small bearings. For me it was $20 for boot or $100 for shaft.

Im guessing the lower boot? It is the boot that is directly behind the wheel. Napa has a axle for $52.00 so I will probably just replace the passenger one for sure (the one that is torn). Not sure if I should replace the drivers also.

There is usually a little play in them. Replace the one that is ripped for sure. If you have the funds replace the other side as well as an insurance policy. If we are talking about the CV half shaft.

Yea mine has been ripped for about 3000 miles with no problems except that grease has been slung everywhere. I am waiting to do it cause the shops where I live want over $200 just in labor to do it...
But if you do it, I would do the whole thing. Also check rockauto if you plan to do it yourself. They seem to have the best prices.

You want to replace the whole thing as a unit. Once the boot cracks contaminants get into the bearings and they fail.

Yes that is the CV Half Shaft I am talking about.
