Default No 2nd Gear! pleeease tell me its not a bad tranny

Ok Im new to this forum so first of HI! I have a 2003 Dodge Durango R/T 5.9 Magnum, 2 wheel drive. I dont know the type of tranny but auto. It has 126,000 miles. Yesterday I noticed as I was riding in it that it wouldnt go into 2nd gear . It would rev up to about 4000 RPMs and around 30 MPH before it would shift into third. So I guess it skips second gear. I took it to a tranny shop (a local one, not a big name brand one) and had a guy test drive it and he said that second gear was gone and I would have to have it rebuilt for about $1500-$1600 I dont know if he was right or if he was just tring to sell me. I did check the fluid and it was full and didnt smell burnt. Is there ANYthing I can do to try to fix this without replacing the tranny or am I SOL? I really dont want to have to replace the tranny cause i really dont have the money for it right now. So if there is anything else i can try to do?

first im going to point out a couple of things

1) you have a 46re trans
2) you do not have a 2wd R/T they dont exist, youe ither have a 2wd STL+ w/ the 5.9 or an awd R/T
3) if they didnt open up the trans idk how they can say that 2nd gear is completely shot, it sounds more electronic to me.

try this, unplug the wires going to the transmission and try shifting in manually, if it it manually shifts into all the gears then the problem is electronic, if not come back and we will give you the next step.

I would first drop the transmission pan and inspect for debris, and take a look at the front band kick down strut. Is it missing or bend? Or the front band maybe way out of adjustment.

Okay so I tried shifting it manually and it still would not shift into second. So i went under and started checking plugs. I looked at one toward the back which im assuming is the speedometer sensor but it looked fine. However, I pulled one toward the front (I think this is the governor pressure sensor) that had like a plunger thing coming from it, and when i pulled it, it had oil dripping from it and oil all in the connection. Is this normal? Could this be my problem?

definitely not normal to have trans fluid leaking out (im assuming you left the pan on) so id say there is a chance, got a picture of the sensor?

If u have photobucket or something similar upload the picture to an album there and post the image code in a post here. The image code starts with [img] and ends with [img]
