I would agree with hydra and check the cv's. I would also get a buddy over to listen to which side it is coming from. Another set of eyes and ears never hurts.

CCexp:

Don't forget to check out the front driveshaft. The joint at the T case is known to have issues and can eventually take out the T case when it grenades.

You might consider removing it and seeing if the noise goes away. That will also allow you to get a real good look at both ends.

+1 on the front driveshaft. In the beginning it can sound like a clicking. Most people don't really notice it until it gets worse and sounds like marbles in a metal coffee can though.

Thanks

If it looks really old, then it probably time to replace. Jack up the front of the truck and spin the driveshaft and listen for squeaks, clicks, or the driveshaft feelin loose and wobbly

Would anyone have a picture of what to look for? When I had the front end up and rolled the wheels around the sound seemed to come from the front differential. There was play in it when I would change directions. The transfercase and joint right in front or back depending on you view looked fine but I will jack it up again and check the spot at the transfer case to see if I can hear anything. BTW it is an AWD 4x4.

we are having the same issue. Did you determine what the cause was? Our truck is also trying to shift into 4 wheel drive. once we put it into 4 wheel drive there is significantly less noise. Are you having this same issue?

Goodtimez, what year, motor, and 2WD/4X4 do you have as your issue could be the output shaft clip has popped off.

As for the CV, turn the wheel hard and drive forward, if the clicking gets worse then most likely a CV, also you can get under it and look at it.

You can also jack the tire op and turn the wheel and listen for the clicking then track it down. Also removing the drive line on the front (after marking it of course) and seeing it the issue goes away is a good idea as well for testing.

What about this:
Before I heard the clicking sound I had driven on a wet canal bank (Central Ca.) and lost traction. Put it in 4hi and then tried to go 4 low, it was extremely muddy. I didn't put the D in neutral before going to 4 low and when I went to go back into 4 hi I noticed the light on 4 low was blinking (tells me it never went into 4 low correct?). After getting back on the pavement, I switched back to 4 hi then back to normal. After all the mud had flung off etc I noticed the clicking. Could I have F up my transfer case and how can I check it?
