Default Clicking noise what to check.

I have a clicking noise from the front of my 01 Durango 4x4. Sounds like when you put a card in the spokes of your bike. It only does it when I am moving. What are some of the possible causes and how can I check them?

Thanks for your help

i would check for something brake related to make sure that nothing is hitting as the wheel goes around.

other things to check are cv boots and wheel hubs (although hubs are usually a grinding sound not a clicking sound every case is different)

also if you have any idea where the sound is coming from that would help us out alot.

Ok I jacked up the driver’s side and tried to rock the tire, top to bottom was fine, side to side might have had a touch of play. I also rotated the tire as far as it would go about an inch or two. I could hear a clicking noise coming from the front differential .

it sounds to me like there is something in the differential, if i were you i would open it up and at least change the fluid and inspect the gears, make sure there is nothing in there bouncing around.

I'd also inspect the cv axles, maybe the boot ripped and something is inside there at the joint making a click?

Ok got the Differential cover off and looked inside. Everything looks good, no missing teeth or worn out looking parts. The fluid was old and very metallically, It hasn’t been changed so it is in need. What is the best way to clean off the old seal? I will clean it up and get it all back together and refilled with fluid. On to the next possible places.

Thanks so far.

Use an old putty knife of razor blade and just scrape away

Could be the CV Half Shaft or wheel bearing.

hmmm
Well the differential fluid has been changed but no change in the clicking noise. The old fluid was pretty bad but everything inside looked good. How do I check the half shaft and wheel bearing? I didn't notice any movement in the wheel when it was off the ground I did the 12 & 6...3 & 9 test and it was pretty solid.
