the gray key is the chrysler sentry key immobilizer system, if you hvae this you MUST have security, however you can have the security system w/o having the immobililzer keys so idk what BS you guys are smelling, but security is NOT a standard feature.

I agree with sharps, I don't think they even had immobilizer keys available for 98 or 99 but they had security systems. Mine has the factory security and a normal black key also.

The fact that the dealer told him that he has to have a gray key to have security... as many of us have black keys and have it.

Black key with security on my D. Had an aftermarket alarm when I got the D in 05 as well. Some cheap piece of junk that had to be ripped out a couple of days after I bought her. I tried to get into the D after doing some shopping and the alarm went nuts. Hada to have it towed home, I did my research and ripped it out.

Well,,, I do know that I do not have a security light on my dash at all,, I turn the key on an looked at the dash an no light for it,, I turned the key off then back on an no light for security,,,, An the place I ordered the new rebuilt PCM box with the Vin numbers off my D they told me that it has no security an thats what the dealer told me,, An when I got keys made for my D the dealer made them from the Vin numbers off my D,,,,, So when I get the other new PCM box Monday (tomorro) then I will put it in an hook it up then see if my D will stay running,, If it does then that will be great, Then I will tear the heads off an fix the head gasets an hope thats all that wrong,,lol,, If all 3 of these PCM boxes starts my D an it dies an one of the PCM box is pose to be with security an was the wrong one from what the dealer told me,, An when I got the first new rebuilt PCM with out security an it did the same thing,, just start an die,, Even if I hold the gas done it will just reve up but still dies in couple seconds,, So it always starts an dies for the same time no matter if you give it gas or just let it ideal,, Also,,,, I put my test light on the hot wire for the coil,, An kept my eyes on it as I started my D, When it starts my yest light is on the it gose off the the D dies,,So,,,, Something is turnning off the power what it feels like,, But when I get the new rebuilt PCM box tomorro then I will see if that takes care of it,,, Thanks everybody for trying to help me with this,, But I really don't think the new PCM box will fix the prob but will see,,, Wish I knew more about putting a vid on here then everybody will see how my D starts an dies,,,

My old 1998 had a black key and the security system.

+3 Sharps!

Sounds like the PCM is bad. Let me tell you this, the security is actually in the CTM, not the PDC. It is inside the High Line CTM, not in the standard one. I don't know what else would be in the PCM as "different", but who knows. Also I want you to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

If there is a securty feature and the CTM does have something in it you can reset it here: http://www.dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-...going-off.html

Also, check these TSB's:

TSB 18-36-98
TSB 08-24-00

the security system talks to the PCM for imobilization so the PCM needs to know if it can listen for that or not, the FSM even lists the PCM as being part of the security system so it definitely does play a role.
