Default Over heating

This morning after driving for an hour and a half on the interstate I turned off my Durango for about 5 minutes. When I started it again it started to over heat but cooled off after driving it. Then it happened again when I was leaving the gas station but this time it got hot enough for the gage light to come on but then cooled off right away. I haven't noticed any kind of leak so I'm not sure what's going on. Can anyone help?

Which year/engine do you have? They had a slightly different set up from the 98-99 than the 00-03.

two things i would check,

1) the clutch fan
2) the fluid level in the radiator overflow when the engine is cold, if its dry add some in, iirc the 5.2 and 5.9 will work the air out on their own through a run cycle.

I drove it to work this morning. Do you think it's safe to drive home?

You should be good as long as you keep moving.
